We didn’t talk
about the LT’s face
not even out of the station,
or at the fuel pumps
at the end of shift.  The other
supervisors refused to gossip
 
about it.  We wondered plenty
though, passing him
in the carpeted hallway
under mean white neon,
eyeing the gouges haphazard
above impeccable uniform shirt.
 
It scared everyone
not knowing,
so we pretended

that never healed
